Volumouse – Volume Control for the Mouse
Review by on
From my experience people do one thing when they want to pump up the volume, or when they want to turn it down a bit – they reach for the speaker and they turn the volume knob. I am a software enthusiast and don’t like to do so. I would much rather control the volume in some other way – like with software.

One software application that allows you to control the volume is the Nir Sofer-developed Volumouse. As the application’s name so adequately points out, Volumouse lets you adjust the volume using the mouse. If you leave the default settings alone, you can do this by pressing the Alt button on the keyboard and by moving the scroll wheel up or down.

Press ALT and then scroll down to turn the volume down; press Alt and scroll up to turn the volume up. It is a very simple process and to my mind it is a lot more convenient than turning the volume knob on the speaker – which in my case are place in a very hard to reach location.

If you don’t like the Alt + scroll combination, you can choose another. You can swap Alt with CTRL, meaning that you will have to press CTRL + scroll to adjust the volume. Or you can select “Mouse cursor is over the taskbar”. This way you need only place the cursor over the taskbar, then scroll up or down to control the volume.

By default, Volumouse puts an icon in the taskbar. The icon is handy if you want to access the program’s options. But after you set up things just the way you want, and after you set Volumouse to automatically run at startup, chances are you will no longer want to see that icon. Luckily enough there is an option to remove the icon. I have to say I like that a lot.

If you want to control the volume using a free, easy to use application, then I recommend you give Volumouse a try. I am confident you will not be disappointed.

Pros
  • Easy to use
  • Run at startup
  • Hide taskbar icon
  • Various volume control options
  • Freeware

Cons
  • None that I could think of
